Last year when I purchased the Caribou Lite camper the plan was to get my own full-sized truck. The ‘full-sized truck purchase’ happened a few days ago –
2016 Toyota Tundra SR5 with 5.7L engine, tow package & TRD 4×4 off-road package.
This 2016 is almost the same as the 2007 Tundra I’ve been using for work related travels. The new rig has a better off-road system and a modern in-dash entertainment system (touch-screen, traffic, weather, HD radio, XM radio and syncs with my smart phone’s music library) and a LARGE fuel tank – 38 gallons! This will more than double the driving range I’ve experience in the ’07.
Big gas tank for a 5.7L engine … here I’ve driven 274 miles and still have 273 miles remaining ‘in the tank’.
The truck also has ‘blind spot monitor & rear cross traffic alert’. These two features will be a nice addition when the camper is on the truck when making lane changes and backing out of parking space.
I also like that the truck came with rubber floor mats to keep mud & water off of the floor carpet.
After collecting the new truck from the dealer I enjoyed a full day of ‘driving the new rig’. First stop, after a loop around Denver, was at Outfitter Manufacturing; the builder of the Caribou Lite 6.5 camper.

I arranged to have Firestone Ride-Rite air bags and Torklift I tie-downs installed, just like on the ’07 Tundra.
After making ‘camper arrangements’ I drove up to Lake Dillon, CO, via Clear Creek Canyon (on US 6) and then I-70.

As expected Lake Dillon is still frozen over.

After checking out the lake I stopped for a drink and fish & chips in Pug Ryan’s. During the summer Pug Ryan’s runs the Tiki Bar at the Lake Dillon Marina … my favorite watering hole after spending the day sailing.
After my late lunch I turned East and back home. A fun day of driving in the new rig!

Yes it was chilly with cold rain that would occasionally be snow. continues to be chilly. in Golden the past four days of rain, fog and temps in the 40s. been snowing in the high country.
